Just up the road from Pickwell is the hidden secret of Chapel Woods!
It is a lovely RSPB protected woods with information on the local wildlife and plenty of nesting boxes at head height to look in.
There is a 1 mile circular walk that goes around the edge of the woods and climbs via steps to some lovely views. There are plenty of benches for a rest along the route so its perfect for both little ones and old ones who find the coastal paths a little too much!
Just as you come into the woods there is a ruin of an old chapel and private burial area. This area is perfect for a rest and flask of tea or as we like to do: a sweetie treasure hunt around the walls!
This is a natural stream that bubbles up from below and as long as the semi circle of stones are in place (to stop the stream running into it) you can refresh yourselves with a drink from a natural underground spring!
If all of the above wasn't exciting enough then there is a lovely stream for dam building, splashing in, or floating leaf boats on!
All you need to know:
Chapel woods is 5 minutes drive from Pickwell or a 15-20 minute bike ride (be warned there is a good long hill to climb back up!).
Parking is free on the road in a lay-by next to the gateway in.
Top tips: take a flask of tea and some sweets for treasure hunting!
