Garden

We think the gardens at Pickwell Manor are truly magical, and we hope you do too. In front of the south-facing house, the sun terrace leads down to the Italian Garden, surrounded by many mature shrubs, flowers, and rose arches, all of which have been lovingly tended over the years.

This garden also offers some stunning views over the coast and countryside, with the ocean to the west less than half a mile away, and Baggy Point, Hartland Point, and Lundy Island beyond. The tennis court is next to the Italian Garden, offering one of the most scenic backdrops your backhand will ever have!

To the rear of the house, stone steps lead up to a private walled garden with a large grassed area and orchard. To the east and west of the house are pretty woods with gently meandering paths – great places for children to explore and play.

Located in the far south-east corner of the garden, you will find Pirate Island, a fun area to explore and play for our young visitors. For adults, this area is teeming with wildlife, offers wonderful views and you may even catch sight of our resident Pickwell hare who has his burrow in this corner. The gardens are quiet enough to hear every twitter and chirp of the Pickwell Manor birds and wildlife.

In the far south-west of the garden, Lundy Terrace is a must visit, with its spectacular views of the sea and Lundy Island. We had to take one of our trees down after it developed a terrible lean and we realised it looked a bit like a dragon - so younger visitors may like to test out their balancing skills whilst climbing on our very own ‘dragon tree’.

Martin, our very own master craftsman, works out of the garages opposite the games room. He makes the most beautiful things from wood and has made much of the new wooden furniture around the house from sink stands to sideboards, go and say hi if you are passing or you can see his work on his Instagram whittlingwoodpecker

You can find plenty of benches or seats around the gardens, offering the ideal place to stop and take in the beauty of the house, gardens and surrounding views. We think our gardens are one of the most special things about Pickwell Manor.
